Philip Glass at Menil^25

December 2, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

The world is great! In perfect weather – sunshine and blue skies – today I attended Philip Glass’s performance celebrating the Menil’s 25th Anniversary. Tucked away in a white tent on the lawn of the museum, the world moved more slowly and took a breath. Glass was commissioned by the Menil to compose a new work in honor of their anniversary. The 17th Etude, which made its debut today, is the latest in a series of solo piano works that […]

Oh! Burlesque

July 31, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

There is a fine line between sexy and smutty. And so while I have a hard time with strippers, I adore burlesque. Perhaps it’s all the feathers, glitter, and bling. Or perhaps its the music. No matter, I am a fan of burlesque because it requires the performers to have a sophisticated persona and be decent dancers. More than that, they don’t give it all up. Ever. So, here are some burlesque clips. They do have the dancers down to […]

Colombia!

July 26, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

True story – I insulted the Colombian singer Carlos Vives and didn’t even realize it. When I first moved to Miami – like day 3 – GAD and I were taking Lolita out for a walk and there was a man singing behind us. GAD said to me, “that’s Carlos Vives behind us.” I was totally infatuated with CV at the time and so I thought he was kidding, “Carlos Vives sings much better than that.”  CV could clearly hear […]

Memorial Day Music ’72

May 24, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

For me, Memorial Day is all about driving with the windows down and listening to music. (KR and I have a lot of experience with this.) In honor of the long weekend, I am going to look at the greatest tunes over the past 40 years. Get ready for 1972 –

Norah Jones, the criminal: “Little Broken Hearts”

May 16, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

It is no secret that I am a huge Norah Jones fan. Her latest album “Little Broken Hearts” has her same sound but with a lyrical edge. In fact, Norah gets positively murderous  in “Happy Pills” and “Miriam.” I LOVE IT!

In praise of smart, sassy, sexy women: Liz Phair

April 5, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

The older I get, the more I realize that sass is less about attitude and more about survival and there is no artist that epitomizes that better than Liz Phair. Liz’s first album “Exile from Guyville” was an ambitious song-for-song dialogue with the Rolling Stone’s “Exile on Main Street” where she dared to use the f-word and talk openly of sexual liberation when other angry girl rockers wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole. Phair’s recording moved from protest […]
