Does mediocre coffee taste better in a pretty building? Starbucks storefront design abroad

June 1, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

In the summer of 1998 several glorious things happened. I graduated from high school, I went to NYC to study ballet, and I discovered Starbucks. The mocha frappuccino was like nothing I had experienced before and even though my weekly “allowance” in NYC was $100/week and the drinks were $3+ each,  I felt so sophisticated drinking one as I walked down 6th Ave. So much so that when I returned home, I would drive from Conroe to Willowbrook for a […]

Celebration Delicacy I will not be having for my birthday No. 3: Kopi Luwak

April 11, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

Oh, I love my morning coffee, a beautiful, perfectly frothed capp thanks to my Nespresso machine. (Quiet all you coffee machine haters!) What celebration would be complete without having a cup of coffee made from the most expensive bean in the world: Kopi Luwak? But what makes this the best coffee? It’s natural, cinnamon undertones? Rich aroma? Thick consistency? How much does it cost? How can  I get some? How was it discovered? Well, the truth is that the coffee came […]

Celebration Delicacy I will not be having for my birthday No. 2: snake wine

April 10, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

Yes, I am celebrating my birthday at a wine bar but, even if it’s rare, I will not be toasting year “35″ with a sip of  snake wine. This drink found in China, Vietnam and throughout Southeast Asia  promotes health, vitality and virility. The wine is created by steeping the snake (like the cobras above)  in rice or grain alcohol which, thereby, “kills” the poison. As if you had to ask — this is taken as a shot and eating […]

Celebration Delicacy I will not be having for my birthday No. 1: Ortolan

April 9, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

Since this is a week about celebration, I thought I would introduce some interesting, rare and/or queer gastro delicacies from all over the world. Truth be told, some of these I would never eat or drink and would hardly serve as appropriate choices for my celebration meal but I am all about learning about food. First one was brought up to me by JF: the ortolan. The ortolan is a little-bitty bird related to a finch. It weights 20 – […]

Strawberries on the moon? Cha Champagne Bar

February 28, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

It was a beautiful autumnal day. Slight breeze, bright sun and I was… working. With a large seminar on oil & gas, I decided that it was a good idea if I proofed about 13 legal papers and presentations on a Saturday. Hm, about 300 pages. Obviously, I am lame. I decided, however, not to waste the entire experience. I sat on the patio at Cha Champagne and Wine Bar and asked for a flight of bubbles so I could bask […]

Spanish Revolution: Convivio tapas + bar + lounge

November 6, 2011 by Jeanette Joy Harris

There are so many great things about Spain. Francisco Goya. Antonio Gaudi. Iker Casillas. And tapas. Per my post about new restaurant openings a few days ago, EH, MS, and I checked out Convivio tapas + bar + lounge which is on Durham near Washington. The first things to notice and love about Convivio are the large family style tables that encourage mingling of guests and a more conversational atmosphere.  I almost felt like I was in Spain where strangers actually […]

I am looking for a few dinner dates: New Houston Restaurants

November 1, 2011 by Jeanette Joy Harris

I sound like a broken record — Houston has the greatest restaurant scene right now and there are several recent openings that are on my list of places to go. Who wants to go with me? 1. Convivio Tapas + Bar + Lounge In my never-ending love for all things Spanish, I am looking for a good Spanish restaurant that feels more like Madrid than Disney Land. Fingers crossed since I am tired of always going back to Mi Luna. 2.  Coppa from […]

Am I a foodie or do I just have high expectations?

August 25, 2011 by Jeanette Joy Harris

What the hell is a foodie, anyway? Do we not all eat food? This word is repeated ad nauseam and I am perplexed by it even though most people would say that I am one. GAD and I both love to eat out and we have had the pleasure of dining at some really cool restaurants. For example: Graham Elliott (Chicago) watermelon pop rock foie gras & deconstruced Twinkie caesar salad Mercadito (Chicago) Tequila and salsa flights with lunch.   Morimoto (NYC) 8-course chef’s tasting […]
