In praise of smart, sassy, sexy women: Liz Phair

April 5, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

The older I get, the more I realize that sass is less about attitude and more about survival and there is no artist that epitomizes that better than Liz Phair. Liz’s first album “Exile from Guyville” was an ambitious song-for-song dialogue with the Rolling Stone’s “Exile on Main Street” where she dared to use the f-word and talk openly of sexual liberation when other angry girl rockers wouldn’t touch it with a ten foot pole. Phair’s recording moved from protest […]

Come Fly Away & Twyla Tharp — the best birthday present ever

April 3, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

Two years ago I was treated to the most amazing birthday present — a completely decadent night on the town in NYC. Early evening cocktails? Algonquin Hotel. Dinner? Chez Josephine. Theatre? Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away on Broadway. After-theatre drinks? Bubble Lounge. Is this not a day in heaven? This year my birthday will not be in NYC instead I will be practicing my best Marie Antoinette by drinking champagne and hoping not to set my hair on fire BUT […]

If you like Esperanza Spalding…..

March 26, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

I have been so pleased to see the self-disciplined, hip, and oh-so-talented Esperanza Spalding getting her spotlight lately. Thought I would share a clip of her and then branch out and show you some other folks that you might like. Enjoy! Here is ES performing “I Know You Know” Want to get your scat on? Check out Dee Dee Bridgewater singing “Bye Bye Black Bird” Be a bit patient on this one but check out Herbie Hancock performing “Watermelon Man.” Here […]

The Hunger Games: Fashion is definitely in its favor

March 24, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

Like thousands of other people, I went to see The Hunger Games last night.  And despite the fact that this is a critique of, at the very least, reality tv culture,  and, more probably, the unequal distribution of wealth and power, would it be bad if I just wanted to talk about the clothes? Costume designer Judianna Mokovsky, who has outfitted folks from Hogwarts to Pleasantville, provides the Hunger Games with a seamless, visual aesthetic, ranging from the theoretical, powdered wig-riches […]

Your Friday Salsa Soundtrack

March 23, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

Springtime is here and so is my desire to go salsa dancing as much as possible. Some of my fondest memories are of dancing under the sky during muggy nights, staying up too late, and suffering the next day at work. So although my salsa schedule is not what it used to be, I still love to go, even for just one set. In honor of the commencement of salsa season, here are some classic tracks to start your weekend […]

Art that should be edible but probably doesn’t taste very good: Jeanne Silverthorne

March 21, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

I was flipping through Art Forum and saw an ad for Jeanne Silverthorne‘s current show at McKee Gallery (NYC). Silverthorne creates sculptures and installations made of materials like tear activated protein (?) that, once finished, look like you should be able to take a bite out of them. Check out some images:

Playing Barbie.. Well, kind of: Cindy Sherman

March 20, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

Cindy Sherman has made a name for herself in the photography world by playing dress up, being the central character in thousands of self-portraits. Her breakthrough monograph “Untitled Film Stills” shows Sherman dressed up in various costumes and photographed in scenes that remind you of movie clips lost on a cutting room floor. Neither posed nor accidental and always seemingly mid-breath, these photos are interesting because they show the beauty of transitional moments and the possibility of authenticity in a […]

Music: The Ultimate Latin Lovers

March 7, 2012 by Jeanette Joy Harris

It has been said that I have a preference for men of the Latin American variety. Why is this so? Could it be their dashing good looks or consistent understanding of rhythm? The fact that I love empandas and cafe con leche for breakfast? I may never know the answer to these questions but what I do know is that Enrique Iglesias epitomized everything great about the Latin Lover stereotype at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo last night. To […]
